What is Student Legal Services? Student Legal Services is a service offered to all currently enrolled students of the University of Arizona. The program is sponsored by the Associated Students of the University of Arizona (ASUA) and supported by ASUA funds. There is no charge to students for the service. While the Legal Services Attorney cannot represent you in court, she can offer legal advice, information and guidance to assist you in resolving legal problems and understanding your rights and liabilities. The goal of the program is to provide students with access to an attorney and the legal system, and to help students achieve practical and legally sound solutions to their legal problems so that they can concentrate on their studies.
How do I use the service? You may make an appointment by calling 621-ASUA (621-2782). You will be scheduled for a half-hour appointment. The wait for an appointment is usually no longer than one week and is sometimes shorter. You must bring a current U of A student ID with you to the appointment and show it to the worker at the front desk when you check in. No legal advice will be given over the telephone.
Who staffs the Legal Services program? ASUA Legal Services is staffed by an attorney, licensed to practice law in the State of Arizona. The attorney is assisted by interns from the University of Arizona College of Law.
Will my problem be kept confidential? Yes. Attorneys have a duty under the Rules of Professional Conduct to keep all information received from a client strictly confidential. Every precaution will be taken to preserve the confidentiality of your file and your communications with the attorney. Information will not be released to anyone, including the University administration or your family members, without your express consent.
What should I bring to my appointment? Bring all pertinent documents with you when you come to see the attorney. For example, if you have a problem with your landlord, you must bring your lease or rental agreement. If you have received a criminal citation, bring the citation and the police report. If you don't bring these documents with you, there is a good chance that the attorney will tell you to reschedule the appointment and come back when you do have them.
